My dog has a low appetite. Is he too skinny for his active lifestyle?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | neutered | 3 years and 8 months old | 61 lbs

How can I get him to eat? He never has had a huge appetite. He eats maybe a cup a day two if I’m lucky. He is athletic and playful outside yet very calm indoors. Is he too skinny? He eats pure balance and recently been adding canned food in. He seems to eat better if we put the food in the dog run(tried today and he ate the food)

No he’s not too thin. He’s athletically lean. As long as he has as much food as he wants you do not need to worry. Many dogs regulate the amount they eat depending on their energy expenditure. That way they maintain their optimal weight. You are correct to feed when there are no distractions and he has time to pick at the food if he doesn’t want it all at once.
