Injured wild rabbit found: vet suggests euthanasia. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Female | unspayed | 3 lbs

My friend found a wild rabbit on the streets, and she says it’s 2 legs are broken. We live in Illinois, btw. The only choice the vet said is to put it down. She doesn’t want to, I also heard it’s illegal to have a wild rabbit. Also putting down the rabbit costs close to 200. She isn’t very sure what to do. Any suggestions?

Hello, and thank you for your question. I'm so sorry to hear about this poor bunny. The outcome of this little guy seems very poor, and even if she had surgery, her recovery would be difficult and prognosis guarded. Have you looked into the local wildlife authorities, or animal shelters? They would be able to take in the bunny and have her put to sleep. As difficult as it is to make this decision, putting her down would be in her best interest to alleviate her pain and suffering under the circumstances. Thank you for caring and I hope this bunny gets placed in the right hands soon.
