Why does my young dog have dry skin, brittle nails, and coat issues?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 85 lbs

My dog has bad dry flaky skin, brittle nails that split and break off, and recently started getting white hair all over his body rapidly. He is only just a year old. We have treated him through diet with grain free, oils, pumpkin. He's been treated for mites and a bacterial infection on his skin. Nothing has improved his symptoms. His hair is also thinning around the eyes, nose and inside of legs, pulls out easily andd he sheds like crazy. Otherwise he's a normal, very energetic.

I would encourage you to consider checking his thyroid levels, as this can cause all of these symptoms. You may also consider doing a biopsy of the skin and one of the nail beds to look for signs of an autoimmune disorder or zinc deficiency. Best of luck and I hope you find an answer soon.
