How can I clean my dog's teeth at home if vet cleaning is too costly?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 8.8 lbs

My vet told me to get my dogs teeth professionally cleaned but we can't afford it, what is the best way to get my dogs teeth cleaned at home? She is a cross of Pomeranian and Yorker, she is 8 years old.

I'm sorry to hear that Friday needs professional dental work. It is, unfortunately, very common in her breed crosses. It would recommend saving for the procedure. Dental infections are painful and can even spread to other organs in the body. Cleaning under the gum line and extracting any damaged teeth will resolve the infection and any pain. In the meantime though, you can try a few things at home to help her out. There are dental treats and water additives to help combat dental disease. Tooth brushing is most effective though. Depending on how bad her teeth are, it may be painful for her. If so, forgo this option. I hooe this helps. Good luck!
