My dog has a cheek wound for 3 days and is scratching. Home treatment?

Hello, really appreciate any advice you have regarding my great dane x ridgeback male dog who has a wound on his cheek for 3 days. I'm not sure what has cause it but am thinking maybe it's a spider bite. He doesn't have any other wounds and nothing has changed in his environment. I also have a female labrador x who is healthy. Is there anything I can treat it with at home? He is scratching it occasionally which I am trying to stop him doing. Thank you in advance. Tara

I am sorry to hear about Max. While we cannot tell for sure without examining him in person, it is possible this could be what we call a "hot spot", which is a painful superficial infection/inflammation of the skin. You can read more about this conditon at http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=2714 . I would recommend examination by a veterinarian. Most often we need to shave these and clean them, and prescribe a steroid to decrease the inflammation and pain. Sometimes oral antibiotics are needed as well. Best of luck to you and Max!
