My parakeet's eye is red from molting. Is it infected? What diet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female | unspayed

Hello- We have a female parakeet who is molting around one of her eyes. There seems to be redness in that area but her eye seems fine. She is acting normal; no lethargy or loss of appetite. However, I am concerned if that area is infected or will be infected. She is a picky eater, doesn't like fruits or veggies but only her organic seeds. Should I give her vitamins/minerals? If so, can you recommend any brand? Any insight you may have would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Her eye and the area around it does not look bad. Monitor it for redness, swelling, excessive feather loss or excessive scratching. A small amount of seed is fine, but she shouldn't be on an all seed diet. A commercial pelleted diet would provide a balanced diet. Brands include Roudybush, Lafeber, Pretty Bird, Kay Tee Exact and Harrison's. These can be found online or in most pet stores. A mineral block and a cuttlebone should be provided as well.
