Is twice-yearly Bordetella for kennel cough safe for my dog?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

When living in Pennsylvania, my female golden doodle always had bordatella once a year. She was boarded and groomed. Now living in North Carolina, my groomer requires bordatella twice a year. She is a stay at home dog and is groomed about 3 times a year. I understand that bordatella prevents kennel cough. Does bordatella twice a year with its side affects harm my dog?

Actually it sounds like that grooming facility is very responsible. There are two types of bordetella vaccines, one is an injection of killed vaccine, the other is a live vaccine that is given orally. Bordetella vaccinations should be repeated every six months to a year. The live vaccine is much more effective. The bordetella vaccination given twice a year will not harm your dog and will ensure higher protective titres, and so protect your dog much more effectively from kennel cough.
