Is my dog's paw irritated after shaving? He keeps licking it.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 15 lbs

I shaved my dog paws almost 1week ago. Since than he is been licking his left rear paw. While walking or moving sometimes he sits and raise his hind leg. When we started walking he sat couple of times he didnt want walk and raised his hind leg, than he walked normal. He is been normal running, jumping walking with no . Could his skin still be irriated from shaving or is it something else. His rear paws seems colder than the front paws. It takes longer to warm when he comes from outside

I would agree with you that yes, Sky’s paw is probably just irritated from where the hair has been clipped. The hair is probably just now starting to regrow and so is probably very itchy. I would recommend cleaning the foot to make sure there is no trapped debris or foreign body present. If it all appears normal then continue to monitor it for a couple of days. If it does not improve then you should take him to the vet to be checked out. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
