Dog fell, hind legs recovering. What to do for belly spasms until vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 7 years and 8 months old | 18 lbs

My pet fell in a small hole last weekend and I won't be able to get him to the vet until sometime in the next few days. He lost feeling in his hind legs and has been gaining it back here and there. He's started moving his tail again and now has control of his bladder and bowel. Not every time, but once in awhile when I pick him up, his right side, on his lower belly will harden up, like a knot until he relaxes. I was just wondering what kind of care should I give him until he sees a vet. TIA!

He needs to rest. You can use a sling or towel under his belly to help him stand to go potty and take short walks in the yard. Many dogs with neurological injuries will have muscle spasms and that can cause the knotting up that you are seeing. Your veterinarian will do an exam and prescribe medication for pain and often a muscle relaxant also. Will time he should improve as you are already seeing some positive changes.
