My puppy pees on floor for others, but uses pad for me. How to fix?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 months and 23 days old | 14.4 lbs

Every time I’m home, my puppy pees and poops on the wee pad. Whenever I’m not home & relatives are taking care of him, he pees on the floors and carpets rather than on his wee pad. Why is this and how can I fix it?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Toffee is very young! I think the problem likely arises from the people that are taking care of her. They may not know how to pick up on her cues that she has to go, are playing with her and distracting her too long and not realizing it is time to stop and let her go to the bathroom. At almost 3 months old it is common to have accidents. She is likely more distracted by the relatives. I would start with teach them to take Toffee too her pee pads more often. I hope this helps and I wish you and Toffee the best!
