My bearded dragon won't sleep. Should its heat lamp be off at night?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

So I got a juvenile beaded dragon like about 2 weekend ago, but I noticed he does not sleep as much, and every time I turn of his lights he goes to sleep, but the lady at petco told Me that I should always keep the heat lamp on, should I turn it off at night or leave it on? I'm worried he might not get enough sleep and might die

The lights should go off at night. A photo period of 12-14 hours depending on the season is recommended. The heat lamp can be turned off as long as nighttime temps in the enclosure do not fall below 70 F. If they do, you can use a ceramic heat emitter, or CHE. This will provide heat without visible light and will not disturb your dragon while sleeping.

If it projects light, then yes, it should be turned off at night, so their natural circadian rhythm preserved. However, you should ensure that there is an alternative heat source (i.e. a heat pad). I always found it difficult to ensure that the light is turned off at night and had timers set to do the job for me. I hope that helps and all goes well with Scratch. These are great pets!
