My guinea pig has respiratory issues and is on Albon. Should I give probiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

One of my 2 month old baby guinea pigs passed away this morning after becoming disoriented two nights ago. He did not loose his appetite and looked to pass normal feces. He brother began to sound hoarse last night when wheeking, and after taking him and his mother to the vet the morning they were perscribed 2-3 drops of albon twice a day. I called back this afternoon after noticing he had nasal discharge and was told he could be administered albon 3 times a day. Do I also give him a probiotic?

I am sorry to hear about your loss. The signs you are describing could be compatible with an upper respiratory tract inflammation/infection or eventually to a chronic rhinitis (inflammatory, allergic, infective). Unfortunately respiratory tract infections can be quite severe in guinea pigs. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed, but no probiotics are necessary at this stage.
