My puppy ate a bone, is vomiting and trembling. What should I do?

Our Labrador mix puppy (about 3 months old) ate a teething bone. He crunched it up (unsure how small) and ate the whole thing. He has thrown up twice this morning and is now napping, but he seems to be trembling a bit with each breath. What should we do?

Shooter has probably developed gastritis from eating the bone. I would recommend withholding food (water is ok as long as he’s not vomiting it all up) for 12-24 hours. After that you can try feeding him something that will be easily digestible and easy on his GI tract like plain boiled chicken and rice. If the vomiting continues for more than 24 hours and/or if he starts having diarrhea then I would take him in to the vet to be examined. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.

You should definitely take Bones in to your veterinarian if you are able to have him evaluated. He is so young that I am very concerned he is already dehydrated from that much vomiting. Bones could have several problems going on, such as intestinal parasites, eating something he shouldn't have (dietary indiscretion), or even a bacterial or viral infection (like parvovirus). He may need fluid therapy and anti-nausea medication. He also may need tests, like a fecal check for intestinal parasites, x-rays, and a parvo test, to see what is the underlying cause of his vomiting so he can get appropriate treatment.

Poor Lucky! From your description of the way he's acting, I would be concerned that he the bone may have become stuck in his stomach or intestines, so I would recommend taking him to a veterinarian as soon as possible for an exam and x-rays. If the bone is causing blockage or has perforated the stomach or intestines, he will need emergency surgery to remove it and repair the damage.

It could be that the bone has upset Bullseye's stomach leading him to vomit. I never recommend giving bones to dogs because of the risk of broken teeth and intestinal obstruction. I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps him. Withhold food for 12 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, you see blood in his feces, he stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Good luck, I hope this helps!
