Why is my dog's tongue blue after taking Rimadyl medication?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | neutered | 2 years and 1 month old | 13 lbs

Hello My dog has been on Rimadyl 1/2 tablet 2 times a day for 2 days. Prescribed after being lethargic several days after a set of vaccinations. He has return back to normal running playing and eating using bathroom normally but his tongue ive noticed has a blueish tinge. Can this be a side effect of the medication?

I'm glad to hear that Spencer is feeling better! I do not typically associate a blue tongue with a side effect of Rimadyl. Since he is acting normal again, it would be ok to stop the medication. If the tongue color does not go back to normal, I would recommend seeing his veterinarian. If at any time he is struggling to breathe, gasping for air or acting very sluggish he woyld need to see his veterinarian immediately. You can also lift his lip and look at the color of his gums. They should be pink. If the gums look blue, grey or white this is an emergency as well. I hope this helps you and Spencer!
