Why is my newly adopted dog coughing, not eating, and lethargic?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 8 lbs

I just adopted my dog from petco today. She is around 3 years old and she is a chihuahua mix. she is coughing since 02/26/18. However, on the paper showed she is fine. When she coughs, it feels like she will throw up. She didn't eat anything until now since I got her, and she is lethargic. She only had a little bit of water, and she didn't pee or poo. What's wrong with her?

Cough can be caused by an infection, heart problem or lung condition, it is important to first know the cause before treating it as treatment is different from condition to another. The most common disease causing cough is a viral/bacterial infection called Kennel cough, this disease usually resolves without treatment within a couple weeks but if the cough is too severe it is recommended to go to the vet in order to get cough medicine and antibiotics.
