My dog's bug bite turned into a black bump. What is it and what to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 30 lbs

Rambo came in with a tiny red bump on his back so we treated it as a bug bite. A month later, it's turned into a huge, semi-solid black bump. But Rambo's not showing any signs of illness. What is it and what can I do?

A black bump on the skin of a white dog is always concerning of melanoma. It's best to have a veterinarian evaluate Rambo sometime soon to get an accurate diagnosis. The dark skin can also happen with continual irritation, or when the tissue is dying. Unfortunately, the picture is not clear enough to differentiate between the two, but I would need to examine it more closely to help narrow-down the cause of this. Below is a link to more information about melanoma. https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/skin-melanocytic-tumors I hope that helps and Rambo gets better soon.
