My dog has protein loss. What diet is best and what's the prognosis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 3 years and 11 months old | 6.5 lbs

My dog was diagnosed with protein lossing enteropathy. Right now she is taking Metronidazole and Prednisone. The doctor recomend me to change her diet, but didnt specified what kind of food sholuld I give her from now on. Is hydrolized protein food a good option for her? Any brand that can you recomend me? Also what is the prognosis for this kind of condition? How long can my dog last, I don't want to put her to sleep, either I don't want her to suffer. Thank you

Yes a hydrolyzed diet such as royal canin hypoallergenic can be very helpful. In cases which respond well to treatment a near normal quality and life expectancy can exist. Some cases are less responsive and can struggle to maintain health and fitness despite immunosuppressive and chemotherapy medications but it would take 10-12 weeks before any assessment could be made on her progress
