Why is my dog incontinent after neutering? Vet says it's not linked.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Bulldog | Male | neutered

6 weeks ago my British bulldog was castrated as he had a tumor which turned out to be benign. Two weeks after the surgery he has started to be incontinent. Mostly of urine it is not drips it is puddles. I’ve been to see the vet and they say it’s not linked to surgery they won’t give me anything to help with this either. He is in good health, he’s 10 years old in June. Please help this is very distressing for both of us

He is so cute! If you are finding that he is urinating while he is sleeping then this definitely could be incontinence. I would talk to your vet about trying Proin (aka phenylpropanolamine) to see if this helps. This helps to tighten the urethral sphincter to prevent incontinence. It is used most commonly on female dogs but I have had some success using it in males. If you are seeing puddles throughout the house, he could have a urinary tract infection. I would have your vet do a urinalysis on him to see if there is any bacteria present. Your vet will be able to prescribe him the proper antibiotics to help him feel better. I hope this helps!
