Why is my puppy acting stubborn and pulling on walks sometimes?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Akita | Male | neutered | 8 months and 19 days old | 100 lbs

I'm not sure what's up with my 8 month puppy he is an American Akita we have the same walk routine everyday, but on some days he just starts to act out! He'll be fine one moment walking right next to me with a slack leash, the next he is pulling on the leash laying completely flat on his belly, and when I tug on his harness and tell him to heel, he starts zig-zaging and trays to push me away with his legs...I just don't understand why this happening!?

He's a puppy and just being bratty! You are doing well to have him walk on a loose leash most of the time. I would bring treats with you and when he starts this behavior don't pull on the harness just say 'let's go' and lure him forward with the treat. Give him the treat when he stands up and starts walking again. He will improve as he gets older. On your walks you can mix up walking with some 30 second trotting intervals to keep him interested and paying attention to you. You are doing a great job training, ignore this behavior, don't fight with him but give him an alternate behavior to perform instead and reward that.
