My dog is overweight from people food. How can I help her lose weight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My female golden doodle has gained about ten pounds since we moved in June last year. She is 3.5 yrs old and weighs 67 lbs. We throw her a ball outside most days. She is walked 2-3 times a day. We give her a scoop (about 6 oz) of food in the morning and evening, sometimes with a spoonful of canned food. My husband feeds her table food, fruit like apple and banana, and snacks including chips. What affect does people food have on dogs and any suggestions how she should lose weight?

People food can cause GI upset and pancreatitis. It is also extra wasted calories that lead to weight gain. It would be best to stop the table food to start. If he wants to give her something special, make it plain green beans or cheerios. Those are healthy with little calories to add up. You can increase her activity level to something more active than just a walk to help. IF this does not help then change to a prescription diet such as science diet metabolic formula to loss the weight.
