How can I stop my dog from whining in her crate when I leave the room?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Female | spayed | 6 months and 5 days old | 48 lbs

She whines if we leave her in her crate and leave the room. It’s not Separation anxiety because she is fine in dog run with other dog. Can I use listerne spray to spray her mouth when she does this? Then give meat for when she does good. Did it today twice and she was good for a while and I got her out before she fussed. She is old enough to know not to do it. She loves her crate otherwise just wants to be out when we go to do something outside or need to get something in the garage etc

Poor pup! No, I would not recommend using Listerine spray or anything else to punish her for whining. Whining is a form of communication - she's telling you that she's anxious or not comfortable in her crate by herself. Trying to address the behavior through punishment will only make her more anxious and worried, and is likely to worsen the problem in the future. Instead of punishing her for being worried or afraid, I would focus on helping her be more comfortable in the crate by herself. Try giving her a special long-lasting treat, such as a bully stick or a Kong stuffed with peanut butter, when you put her in the crate to help keep her busy - this will also teach her to associate good things with being in the crate by herself over time. Getting her out before she gets upset will also help, so kudos to you for doing this :)
