Do dogs understand death and mourn the loss of a pet or person?

Do Dogs understand Death? I showed Jake my Mother, upon her Death, and, also, a previous dog, Zoe, that Jake grew up with, who was killed on the road, when they both got loose from our fenced off yard. Jake smelled them, snorted, and left. For 9 months, Jake just sat by back door, outside, and looked so lonely. He seemed to be going through Mourning for Zoe. I don't know if Jake realized Zoe and my Mother were dead, or not. Do you?

That is an interesting question. I think they do understand their people and friends are gone and grieve for them. Usually increasing the exercise and time with you and other pets will get them back to being more interested in life. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Jake.
