Why do my birds keep chewing perches and ladders? Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 10 months old

For quite some time both of my birds have been chewing the life out of their perches and ladders. I give them gravel grit, and greens, and vitamins in their water. Is this normal, or is there a deficiency, or an underlying problem?

It's definitely normal and is more of a nesting/boredom behavior rather than an indication of a vitamin or mineral deficiency. You can get them to chew on other toys or other objects if you want to minimize the damage to the perches and ladders. Below is a link to some good ideas for keeping them busy. http://www.parrotenrichment.com/ I hope that helps and all is well with the Budgies.
