Why does my puppy whine and bark in his crate at night?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 1 month and 18 days old

Jasper is 7 weeks old. His crate is right next to my bed. I just took him out to do his buisness bc he was whining in his kennel. He did it, so I put him right back in it. Hes continuing to whine, and starting to bark as well. I'm trying to sleep (along with everyone else in my house) and I know I'm supposed to ignore him but is there anything else I can do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Jasper is very young and likely lonely. Barking in the crate at 7 weeks is very normal. You can try putting a blanket over the crate to create a "den-like" environment. If he doesn't chew up toys you can place a large stuffed animal for his to snuggle up with. Still try to hold your ground and ignore him. You can also consider putting the crate in another room and everyone closes their bedroom doors until he is fully crate trained. I hope this helps and I wish you and Jasper the very best!
