How do I know if my Dachshund is a healthy weight or too thin?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 7 months and 5 days old | 22 lbs

Dear Professional, How much should a Dachshund weight? As you can see Sammy is “not too heavy”. I’m afraid if he’s not gaining enough. I already asked this but I think I accidentally stated, that he is a mini Dachshund, but he is not. Waiting for the reply.: Regards Janos

Sammy's photo did not come through. Since many dachshunds vary in size I cannot give you a specific weight. If you can feel his ribs, but not see them, and if he has a nice tuck up in his abdomen then he is a good weight. If the backbone is prominent then he's too thin. Overweight dogs are more square, no abdominal tuck and you cannot feel their ribs. Most people's dogs are too heavy so even if you think he's thin his weight is probably fine. It is rare to see too thin a dog that is not sick. Please send a photo again if this doesn't answer you question. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Sammy.
