My 6-month-old puppy has a lump on his neck. Should I worry?

Hey, my pup (chihuahua cross mini pincher), Alby is 6 months old and out of nowhere today I felt marble sized lump behind his neck (between his shoulders). I was just wondering if it’s something I should be worried about. Thanks, Shania

Hi Shania! This marble sized lump could be a benign tumor, which can happen in puppies. Typically they are harmful, but because I can't see Albus in person, I can't say for certain if he does have a benign tumor causing the lump. It's always best to have any lumps and bumps checked out by the vet, and I recommend taking him into one in the next couple of days. The vet can diagnose what is causing this lump, and what (if any) treatment is needed for it. I hope this helps!

Any lump which is growing in size or changing in texture or colour needs to be assessed by a vet to rule out sinister causes such as tumours - even though they are rare in dogs this young they are not impossible. Other possible causes are cysts, abscesses and enlarged lymph nodes to name a few

My 7 month old puppy over the last week has developed and pimple / bump on his neck, it doesn’t seem to bother him but it worries me.
In a young dog these are often a little cyst or a mass known as a histiocytoma. These may grow a little bigger, but eventually go away on their own after a couple of months. I think it would fine to just monitor this for now. If grows rapidly, or breaks open, or has any other dramatic changes, then it's best to have your vet examine Capone in order to definitively diagnose the cause of this and provide the necessary treatment. This lump in your puppy’s skin is probably nothing to worry about. It could be from an insect bite or sting or may be a reaction to a vaccine he had in that area. Keep an eye on it for now. If it becomes larger, painful, or red, then take him to your vet right away. Or if he starts acting lethargic, vomits/has diarrhea or stops wanting to eat, you should take him to be checked out. 3 week old puppy has a grape size lump on his neck close to his jaw line just popped up today
From the location my best guess would be an enlarged lymph node - this could be confirmed on a physical exam performed by your vet. Lymph nodes are where his immune system is stored and can become enlarged when Luicus is fighting an infection, or inflammation. It may be best to have him examined tomorrow to check he's not running a fever.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This could be a benign or malignant growth. This could even be an abscess. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Hello, thank you for your question about Skurge. Based on the symptoms that you are describing I would be suspicious that this lump could be an abscess, or an infection. Dogs get abscesses in their neck area not uncommonly often secondary to trauma or bad dental disease (less likely in your puppy). I would recommend having Skurge seen by your veterinarian so that they can examine the area and discuss additional treatments. Hope this helps, good luck!

This could be a benign tumor, but it is concerning that it's gotten bigger. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. It could be a histiocytoma which is a benign skin tumor that is usually seen in young dogs. The tumor usually spontaneously goes away without treatment. Your vet can do a fine needle aspirate to determine the cause and if treatment is needed.

Hi I have a puppy who is around 10 months old and she has a red lump on the side of her face. It is small but appears hard I am wondering what this could be?
Chloe is adorable! The lump on her face could be due to a number of issues, including a benign or malignant mass, cyst, granuloma, among others. Given her young age, a benign mass like a histiocytoma seems most likely, but the only way to definitively determine the cause of this lesion is through a fine needle aspirate. This procedure is performed by drawing a few cells from the lesion with a needle so that the sample can be examined microscopically. From there, the vet will be able to provide more information as to whether it is better to monitor the lesion (histiocytomas typically go away without intervention within 3 months) or surgically remove it. I do recommend taking Chloe to her vet to get to the bottom of this issue. I hope this helps and that all goes well!
