Why is the skin under my dog's nose red, irritated, and looks scraped?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | neutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 125 lbs

My Great Dane dog is black and right below his nose the black skin looks like it’s been scraped off and it’s showing red skin, not bleeding but looks Irritated. Did he scrape it or could it be something else?

He may have scraped it, but the skin doesn't look damaged right now, so it may be in the process of healing. It's also possible that it's simply losing the black pigment, which can happen normally. It doesn't appear irritated to me, but I would want to evaluate it in-person to be sure. I think it's fine to just monitor this area for now. I do not see any need for treatment, but you may consider taking him to the vet for an exam if the area appears more read, or develops any further changes that are concerning. I hope that helps and all is well with Winston.
