My GSD has EPI, bloated stomach, and gas. Is it bloat? Should I wait?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 70 lbs

My gsd has just been diagnosed with EPI recently but tonight we have noticed that his stomach has expanded and he is farting a lot. I’m worried it’s bloat but he is acting normal ( wants to play, no vomiting, not lethargic, maybe a little restless, no excess drooling). I’m just really scared. I plan on taking him to the vet in the morning but should I wait that long? Please help!

I certainly understand being worried about bloat! It can be a common problem in deep chested dogs like a GSD, but it's a good sign that he is acting normal. EPI can cause farting, so that may be the reason behind his gas. I would monitor him closely tonight. If you see unproductive vomiting (trying to vomit but nothing coming out), pacing, anxiety, excessive drooling, weak pulse, labored breathing, or abdominal pain, then definitely take Thor into an ER vet tonight. Otherwise it's fine to wait until the morning. I hope this helps!
