My cat's severe neck wound is oozing. What can I use to clean it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Wirehair | Male | unneutered | 13 lbs

I found a cat with a horrible neck wound which was probably a abscess. There is no skin to stitch together because at the least 3 inches in both directions the skin is gone. I am on the second week of giving him antibiotics and though it looks better in places it is starting to ooze again. Is there something I can use to clean the area. There isn't anyway to bandage because it is open up to close to jaw area too.I am in need of help here I have to get this Tom better spayed and outside..

I am so sorry to hear about Garfield! I would recommend rechecking with your vet. It is possible the wound may have a more resistant bacteria and the wound may need to be cultured to determine if the antibiotic is effective. Sometimes these wounds need to be debrided (dead tissue removed) and have a special bandage called a tie-over bandage (used for areas difficult to bandage) with wound dressing such as medical grade honey to stimulate granulation/healthy tissue formation initially as well.
