My Golden Retriever has a new growth on her neck. What could it be?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | spayed | 5 years and 7 months old | 65 lbs

Hello! While we were out of town our dog sitter noticed an odd growth on our Golden Retriever's neck that we were unaware of. We won't be able to see a vet until we return to town, but we're hoping for an opinion to save us some stress while we are away. Could you please take a look at the photos and give an opinion on what we may be looking at? Dog behavior was still happy and she didn't seem to be bothered by this spot. Thank you!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Arizona! I think she will be fine while you are away. That didn't show up overnight despite how it looks. It is impossible to tell you what it is by looking at it as many skin growths look the same. The tip of it is a cornified, horney protuberance which tend to be benign. The red base worries me a bit. I would have her examined when you get home. If she was mine I would have it removed and biopsied for peace of mind! I hope this helps and I wish you and Arizona the best!
