My dog has a squishy lump on his rib cage and is sluggish. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | 10 years and 6 months old | 51 lbs

My big baby, has an odd lump near his rib cage on the right side and it's not his ribs because it's only on one side and its and squish, not hard. I'm very worried it might be that thing where the tissue opens up and his organs fall threw. He has also been sluggish and more grumpy when he is usually running around, playing and happy, he is also half Golden Retriever. I couldn't add a good picture because he's too fluffy and I couldn't find the lump but I could feel it. So what is going on???

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good day!
