My Sheltie is coughing. Is a collapsed trachea common for the breed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shetland Sheepdog | Female | spayed | 8 years and 4 months old | 29 lbs

Coughing ... one vet suggested a collapsed trake. Did not even see my dog with that diagnosis. He said Shelties are known to have that problem. What do u think.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Generally, tracheal collapse is diagnosed based on many findings but usually at least radiographs or fluoroscopy are needed to make a diagnosis. Even though it is possible that Savanna has tracheal collapse, there are other possible things that she could have such as pneumonia, bronchitis, heart disease, among other possibilities. This warrants a veterinary evaluation. Good luck and have a great day!
