Why does my active cat have runny stool after eating many treats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | 5 lbs

My cat has had a runny light brown stool for 24 hours. She's bright and playful and eating and drinking normally. I've given her a lot of cat treats like Dreamies and Felix goodie bags because we're snowed in and she's terrified of the snow so she's a bit stressed too. What should I do?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. She is likely experiencing dietary indiscretion from eating the treats. You can stop giving the treats to see if her runny stools improve. If these continue, I recommend that you have Dubh evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may choose to check for parasites and to start medications for diarrhea depending on the results. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

It looks there may be something in Cora's poop that she has eaten, maybe some string or part of a toy. Keep an eye on her. If her poop continues to look like that, or she shows signs of illness such as vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, or lethargy, take her into the vet. Best of luck.

If you are seeing runny stools or Jullie is having accidents in the house it is possible she could have some GI upset, internal parasites (such as worms) or an underlying illness. It is best to bring her into the vet so she can be examined and dewormed or treated as needed. Bringing in a sample of her stool to your vet can help them more easily check for common problems. If you are having trouble affording care, asking family members for help, or seeing if there is a lower cost clinic in your area may help.
