My dog has black specks near her mouth. Are they fleas? What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 9 months old | 4 lbs

Today I've noticed something black and small near the mouth of our little pooch. I've attached the photo as well. I apologise for the bad quality, she didn't like it. Could it be fleas? What should I do? Any product recommendations? Any advice would be appreciated.

I am not able to tell what it is that you see on Bella. It is very possible it is a flea if she is not on a flea control. There are several different flea medications you can choose from and it is dependent on your preference. Oral flea controls work great and can last from 4-12 weeks, depending on which product you choose. Since these are oral medications you have to have a veterinarian prescribe them. Topical flea controls can work well but are not all equal in efficacy. If you decide to opt for a topical medication I would try Advantage which you can buy OTC at PetCo. I hope this helps. Let us know if you have any additional questions. Best of luck.
