My dog has trigeminal and vestibular disease. Can he have both?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | neutered | 10 years and 4 months old

My dog was diagnosed with suspected idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia. Tonight he suddenly started to lose his balance and seemed drunk. I took him straight to the vet and he suggested vestibular disease. I need to go back in 48hrs or earlier incase he doesn’t improve. My question is, can he have both, or do you have the trigeminal symptoms with vestibular? If a dog has both symptoms what’s the likely good it’s a tumour? If a tumour is present how possible is treatment?

It is possible to have both the trigeminal neuralgia and vestibular disease but it is more likely that it is just the vestibular disease. What was originally thought of as trigeminal neuralgia was probably just early signs of the vestibular disease. Typically dogs with this diagnosis recover in 3-5 days and only need supportive care to get through the worst of it. I have however had a patient that took almost 2 weeks to become normal. If Stanley’s symptoms aren’t improving after a few days then further work up is indicated. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
