My cat has a draining hole with pus. Can I treat it at home safely?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

My cat has a gaping hole, an abscess. I don't think he really feels pain unless you touch the area. He is not as hungry as he usually was. There is liquid water pus coming out of it. We noticed the hole about one and a half hours ago and we don't have time to go to the vet. What should we do to keep Smudge from getting seriously infected? Is there any way we can treat him at home? Sorry the pictures are kind of difficult to see the scale. But this abscess is right on his chest. Please help so

I recommend cleaning the area with a warm damp cloth to remove the discharge. Then you can apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. Actually, now that it’s draining the infection his fever should break and this should heal quickly. It’s important to keep it clean and for the wound to stay open so the infection doesn’t stay under the skin. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Smudge.
