Is an indoor dog more likely to run away than an outdoor dog?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Am I right in thinking that house dogs are more likely to run away? Me and my freind bought 2 huskies from the same litter his lived indoors mine lived outdoors on my farm she never ran away always hung around sure sometimes she'd be out of sight but could always hear me call and come running my friends dog on the other hand once hr gets out he dont look back i think most dogs are cooped up too much so when they get out its so exciting for them more exciting than there home anyway am I right????

Huskies as a breed love to run off and chase things and go exploring. Yes if they are indoors and do not get enough exercise or mental stimulation they are more likely to run off. You have been lucky with yours though as many huskies never stay home. I would encourage your friend to increase the exercise and give their dog more outdoor time running or walking on a leash. If they let him off the leash I would use a GPS collar on him so they can find him and get him back. There is always a risk of injury when dogs run loose. Also male dogs, particularly if they are not neutered, are more likely to roam. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you get answers to your veterinary questions.
