My cat is sneezing. Could he catch my chest infection after I was sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 9 lbs

I am sick with either a viral or bacterial chest infection and have been ill in bed for three weeks. My indoor cat has barely left my side and although seems healthy and happy in every other way today there have been a few explosive sneezes from him with some real squeaky noises! Could I have passed anything on?

It is very unlikely that your nurse kitty Prof. Hopkins was infected by you. Sneezing can be caused by dry air, dust or a viral infection/bacterial infection. I suggest you watch your kitty for a purulent (yellow or green) nasal discharge. If there is a purulent discharge, then your cat does have a bacterial upper respiratory infection and he will need antibiotics from your vet. I hope you feel better soon (and I hope you were seen by your GP, as there is a very nasty flu epidemic in the UK)
