My dog's paw is swollen and he's limping. What should I do now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 4 years old | 15 lbs

Hi! My yorkie, Marley, developed a limp on his back right leg. It looks like his paw is swollen and he won't put any pressure on it. I have carefully looked at his paw and between his nails and can't seem to see or find any thing that stands out. In comparison to his other paw, when viewing from above, his paw is swollen, especially around his nails. It doesn't look like anything is wrong with his paw pads, but I'm not confident. Any assistance for my baby is greatly appreciated!

I am sorry Marley is uncomfortable! I agree that his pads look ok. A swollen, sore paw can be caused by many things including an injury or fracture, an insect bite or sting, or an infection. I would keep him quiet tonight and have him seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. It is ok to wait for tomorrow as long as the swelling is not progressing and Marley is otherwise behaving normally. If there is a wound or sting soaking that paw in warm water and Epsom salts may help. I hope Marley is feeling better very soon.
