My puppy pees and poops inside. Should I use his crate for punishment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | 5 months and 9 days old | 1.3 lbs

My puppy does both. Poop and pee out of his pooping box. I took him for a walk he did it there and he have done it once in the box but he still does it outside although i gave him treats. I put him in his cage, is that the right thing to do as a punishment?

The cage or crate should never be used as "punishment". It should be Gandalf's "safe" place or resting area. He may be a bit confused as to where exactly he should be eliminating if he is allowed to go both indoors and out. Choose one location and stick with it. Dogs thrive on routine, so set up a consistent schedule for him to "do his business". Watch him for cues that he needs to go. This includes circling, sniffing about and whining. He will need to go immediately upon waking in the morning, about 20-30 minutes after eating or playing and just before bedtime.
