Is a little bleeding through the dressing normal after dog surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 9 years and 11 months old | 11 lbs

Hello. My dog (chihuahua 12 lbs) had surgery today to repair, from what I can understand, a torn muscle/ hernia that cause her internal organs to come out of the side? All inside nothing visible from the outside except a big swollen "sack" hanging from her lower abdomen/back leg. (She was attacked and had surgery in the same spot about 4 months ago). She came back home around 2pm and it's 9pm now and I'm seeing a little bleeding through the dressing. Is this normal? I'm very worried.

If there is just a little bleeding the. foxy should be OK. But if the bandaging material is getting soaked with blood that would suggest excessive bleeding and you should take Foxy back to the vet that performed the surgery or to an ER hospital.

Poor Foxy! It sounds like she may have had a hernia. You can see a little bleeding through the dressing after surgery, and that is normal, but if it is excessive, that is not normal and she will need to see a vet immediately.
