My dog eats Blue Buffalo. What's a better food for my Maltese?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | unneutered | 4 years and 3 months old | 11 lbs

Hello, I've always given my dog Blue Buffalo and he seems fine. I found an article about dog food that said that Blue Buffalo is not good and it got me worried. Ever since I've been reading about best dog foods in the market and I keep coming across Wellness Core grain Free. Should I switch to this brand? Is there anything better that I'm not aware of? He is a Maltese about 11 1/2 pounds, 2 years and 4 months.

I will be completely honest with you, I do not like Blue Buffalo (BB) at all, and that's a feeling held by many of my colleagues. They don't own their own factories to make the food, so they give the recipe to a factory to make it. This means they have no quality control over their food, and have admitted that publicly. In addition, it causes horrible gas. I personally never recommend feeding a grain free food to dogs unless they have allergies. Grains are beneficial to dogs, and I recommend owners feed a high quality food such as Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, or Iams. If you really want to feed Luka a grain free food, I recommend Acana or Orijen. Those are very high quality foods as well.

Opinions will differ on all pet foods. If Luka does well on Blue Buffalo (no GI upset, not obese, readily eats it, etc.), then keep him on it. If you feel he would do better or just as well on a different diet that you feel better about, switch him. If you decide to switch, do it gradually (over the course of 7-10 days) to prevent GI upset. The website www.dogfoodadvisor.com is an excellent resource for comparing diets.
