My dog has Lyme disease. Why isn't he improving after 7 days?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bernese Mountain Dog | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 10 months old | 88 lbs

My dog has tested positive for Lyme and has been on antibiotics for 7 days out of the 30 but still has not really improved. He has been breathing heavily somewhat coughing ( kind of im not sure what a dog cough sounds like) appetite is not normal, one day he'll eat three cans of dog food and have a little more energy and the next no appetite and just lays. He typically wants a lot of attention and lays inside but he is laying outside and doesn't want to get up. He is still walking very stiffly.

I'm sorry Thor has Lyme disease! The antibiotics can cause a loss of appetite as a side effect, so that could be why his appetite comes and goes. Lyme disease does cause painful and swollen joints, and that may explain why he doesn't want to get up and walks very stiffly. Difficulty breathing can also be part of the course of the disease. The normal course of treatment with antibiotics for Lyme disease is 30 days, but sometime treatment may go on longer. I would give your vet a call in the morning to let them know you haven't seen any improvement in Thor, and they can advise you if they want you to bring him in for a health check.
