My 1-year-old rescue dog struggles to stand. Is it his hips?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | 6 months and 7 days old | 20 lbs

We got a rescue dog and he is 1 years old. We were told that a vet checked him out and said the hip problem was that he "hasn't quite grown into his hips yet." He seems to have problems getting up when laying down.

I would have Topaz seen by a vet if he's having problems getting up when laying down. I would be concerned that he may have a problem with his hips, spine, or joints in his legs causing these problems. Hip dysplasia is a genetic disorder that is more common in large breed dogs, but it can occur in smaller breeds. I think it would be a good idea to have x-rays done on his hips, spine, and back legs to see if there is an identifiable problem behind his difficulty getting up. If one is found, the vet can discuss treatment options with you.
