My dog is shivering, but acting normal. When should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

It is common for my dog to have head tremors but I was just sitting with her and petting her head when she started shivering. I think it was just her head but it's not normal for her to shiver. She is acting normal, it's just the shivering.

Your pup could be shivering because she is cold or in pain. Because she is acting normally, I would monitor her for now. Take her temperature rectally. A dog's normal temperature is between 101-102.5F. If it's above 103F, or the shivering continues through the night, I would have her seen by a vet.

It could be that Butters could be running a fever or may be cold, both of which can be causes of shivering. It's good that you have her warm now, and she could be starting an illness, such as a respiratory infection. You can take her temperature rectally (normal temperature is 101-102.5F), and if it's above 103F, I would take her into a vet. Monitor her otherwise, and if she is still shivering and not acting herself in the morning, I would take her into the vet for a health check.
