Cat acting distant after meds, prefers mom. Does she still love me?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Russian Blue | Female | spayed | 7 months and 13 days old | 4.5 lbs

Why doesn't my cat "love me" anymore? She has Bartonella so she needs medications, in 16 years old and she's 7 months. I've been giving her medicine for the past month as it's severe. Ever since it's like she hates me.. she loves my mom. She can't wonder the whole house so there's a gate blocking, she doesn't jump the gate. She does sleep with me at night, but would rather do everything with my mom.. how can I make her love me and want me all the time? I always spoil her so idk why she hates me

Cats can be fickle creatures, and they can be very lovely to one person and then switch to another. Given that you have to give Monkie her medication, that's a negative association with you, and I would discuss with your mom both of you taking turns to giving her the medication. It's good that she wants to sleep with you, and if she didn't love you, she wouldn't sleep with you at all. When you give her medication, give her a treat afterwards like some tuna so she associates it as a good thing. Continue to give her a lot of love, she will come around :-)
