My dog spit up phenobarbital. Should I give him another dose?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Harley has Met. Lung Cancer diag. in Jan. 2017. He started having seizures 1&1/2 yrs. ago. I give him Pheno. 2x/day. Gave it to him this morning, 45 min later as he was laying down she started gurgling then spit up about 1/4 cup of yellow mucus. Do I give him another Phenobarb? It appeared bec. of the gurgling it came from his lungs not his stomach but I'm not sure. Need to know before I leave him alone with my daughter and go to work.

I probably would not give another dose if he spit up the material 45 minutes after receiving the phenobarbitol, especially if you are not sure it was actual vomit. Monitor for additional signs and call your vet if you have any concerns. So sorrry that Harley has lung cancer.

If it was pure chest mucus it is likely his phenobarb dose does not need to be repeated. If it frothy, bile stained stomach contents within 45-6ibs of tablet he may have vomited the phenobarbital. If his seizures were severe or frequent i would contact your vets office to discuss repeating the medication, if seizures are rare i would not recommend potentially doubling his dose and would hold off untill his next dose is due
