Why won't my 9-year-old Cavalier settle at night, scratching walls?

My daughter has a cavalier king Charles .Age 9 yrs just .I look after him all day he is not alone I have been minding him also at night so that she can sleep as works long hours .He will not settle through the night scratching every door once in that room it's the walls we have tried vet recommendation s longer walks playtime .We are now out of ideas .Have just bought a cage to see if he feels safe in there .Help

That was a good idea to get Theo a cage. The cage will provide him a small space where he can feel safe in it. You will have to slowly train him to get used to a crate. Start putting him in it during the day and sitting nearby so he doesn't think you are abandoning him, and slowly increase the time he is in it. He can have toys in the crate, and puzzle toys with treats in it that he has to figure out how to get the treats out. You can also fill a Kong toy with peanut butter and freeze it in the freezer overnight, then give it to him in the crate. That will keep him occupied for a while. Finally, you can get a pheromone diffuser called DAP. This may help calm him down at night, and you can pair it with a DAP collar. This will also release pheromones when in contact with his skin.
