My dog has cancer and anal leakage. How long until he's uncomfortable?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | neutered | 9 years and 9 months old | 47.7 lbs

My 9&1/2 year old was diagnosed last month with Met. lung ca. he's still eating all his food and drinking but the past 5 days he's been leaking anal fluid (very foul smelling) I brought him to the vest and it is not his sacks. They said it is the beginning of the end for him and this will continue. How long after this starts do I have with my baby before he stops eating and is he uncomfortable?

I'm so sorry that Harley has cancer! Every dog is different, and some decline faster than others. I would monitor him daily, and make a list of five things he loves to do. If he reaches a point where he isn't doing at least two of these things, then his quality of life has declined to a point where euthanasia should be considered. I work for a home euthanasia service, so I face these issues with my client on a regular basis. If you'd like to consult with me further on this, I'd be happy to speak with you. Otherwise, I'm very sorry he has cancer and you have to face this issue :-(
