My dog pants and drools from separation anxiety. Should I be worried?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 11 years old

Hi, I have a Shih Tzu Male who's just turned 11 years old. He has good health according to the vets. He sometimes gets what I think to be separation anxiety when he's put into the kitchen ( a big room) on a night which has happened since a puppy. He was barking excessively to be let out and when I went down I noticed he was panting a lot more than usual but went back to normal after around 30 minutes. With his anxiety we sometimes find him to have drooled alot. Should I be worried?

It could be that Dennis is stressed out from the separation anxiety, and that can cause him to pant a lot and drool excessively as well. If he goes back to normal, I wouldn't be worried, but I would consider using a DAP for him. It's a pheromone diffuser that helps dogs with anxiety, and may calm him down. You can also use a DAP collar, which releases calming pheromones when in contact with his skin. I would see if using those help his anxiety.
